What makes outdoor fabric different (and why it matters)

From Faded to Fabulous: Choosing Durable Outdoor Textiles

Summer is upon us yet again in the Northern Hemisphere, and we’re all determined to get outside into the sunlight as much as possible before it disappears again.

Furniture makers see a spike in outdoor furniture during summer, obviously, our FibreGuard Outdoor fabrics are very popular too.

Why? Let's explain.

What Are Outdoor Fabrics Made Of?

First, what makes a fabric an ‘outdoor’ one? Can’t you just use indoor fabrics with high durability ratings? Our answer is no.

Outdoor fabrics are specifically designed to withstand the unique challenges posed by outdoor environments. Using indoor fabrics outdoors can lead to quicker wear, fading, and potential damage from moisture and UV exposure.

Here’s a comparison between outdoor upholstery fabrics and indoor upholstery fabrics:

  1. UV Resistance: Outdoor fabrics are treated to resist fading and degradation from prolonged exposure to sunlight
  2. Water Resistance: These fabrics are often water-repellent or waterproof, preventing damage from rain and moisture, which is a huge difference
  3. Mould and Mildew Resistance: They’re generally engineered to resist mould, mildew, and other fungi that love the damp
  4. Stain Resistance: Like indoor upholstery, our FibreGuard Outdoor fabrics are designed to repel stains and are easy to clean
  5. Durability: They are made to withstand wear and tear from constant exposure to the elements, including wind and temperature fluctuations

Now, before we go on: outdoor fabrics fall into two main categories:

Woven fabrics are created on looms. They're strong, durable, and excellent for upholstery because they're easy to clean and maintain their shape

Non-woven fabrics like vinyl and polyester mesh are easier to clean since they lack spaces between threads

Is There a Difference Between Waterproof and Water-Resistant?

Yes! And actually, they’re really different. How?

Waterproof fabrics completely block water penetration

Water-resistant fabrics deter water but don't block it completely

How Long Do Outdoor Fabrics Last?

High-quality outdoor fabrics are tough because they have to be: they’re in a very specific environment. So, basically, they stand up to the environment around them really well, because this is what they’re designed for. So, while we can’t give you an exact ‘outdoor fabrics last XX years’, we can tell you what to look for when you’re at the purchasing stage.

How Do Fabrics Protect Against UV Damage?

UV rays break down chemical bonds in fabrics, causing fading and deterioration. Quality outdoor fabrics (like ours) undergo extensive colourfastness testing to ensure they resist:

  • Rubbing and general wear
  • Light exposure
  • Water damage
  • Washing and cleaning

Look for fabrics that have been specifically engineered with UV-resistant treatments and have passed rigorous colourfastness standards. Again, hi, it’s me, FibreGuard Outdoor.

Can Mould and Mildew Damage Outdoor Textiles?

You’re getting the gist at this stage. Outdoor fabrics face constant moisture from rain, humidity, and ground contact. All of these things together create perfect conditions for fungal growth. The combination of dampness and sunlight can also accelerate this process.

Choose fabrics with anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties to prevent mould, mildew, and odour-causing bacteria. These treatments keep your textiles fresher longer and reduce maintenance needs.

Did you know? Sunscreens and oils can be easily cleaned away from FibreGuard Outdoor fabrics in exactly the same four steps as you would use to clean all FibreGuard fabrics. Our upholstery remains easy to clean, wash after wash, stain after stain, with no topical spray treatment needed.

How Should You Maintain Outdoor Fabrics?

  1. Regular cleaning: Spot clean to prevent dirt buildup.
  2. Immediate action: Clean mould or mildew immediately with warm water and mild soap before it sets in.
  3. Protection: Cover furniture during bad weather and avoid placing it directly under trees where falling debris can mount up.
  4. Storage: Store cushions and removable textiles indoors when not in use. Never store anything wet.
  5. Gentle care: Use only water and mild soap for cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage protective treatments.
Did you know? FibreGuard fabrics are unique in the market because you don’t need bleach to clean them. Bleach is a toxic, harsh chemical, damaging materials, people and the environment at large. Please don’t clean with bleach. Learn more about our environmental impact.
